ORGANIC / NATURAL / VEGAN / LOW SULPHITE
This rare grape, commonly planted in Istria, produces full-bodied wines with a deep, dark color, yet maintains higher acidity compared to its relative, Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso, found just over the border in Friuli. The resulting wine has a rich, dark profile, offering flavors of blackberry, prune, and dark chocolate, but with an extra layer of freshness. The bright acidity and robust structure of the wine complement the deep, bold tastes in the food perfectly.
It’s crafted by Dimitri Brečević, the son of a Frenchwoman and an Istrian father, using native Croatian grapes. Dimitri’s winemaking journey began in the French Basque Country (Jurançon), where he was born, and he studied oenology in France. His experience spans top wine regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2004, he returned to his father’s homeland in Istria, where he now creates wines using an old Mussolini-era concrete water tank near the town of Buzet.
The unique Istrian climate, with cold winters and the bura wind, helps preserve acidity and aromas in the grapes, especially during the cooler September nights when harvest typically happens. This terroir and climate contribute to the fresh and aromatic profile of his wines.
